The Exhibition "Remembering Taras...” opened on 22 July 2015 in Kirovohrad Regional Library for Children named after Taras Shevchenko exhibiting artworks from the stock collection of Kirovohrad Regional Art Museum. This exhibition is timed to celebrate the renaming of the Regional Library for Children named after Arkadii Haidar for the library named after Taras Shevchenko.

The decidion about renaming children's library in honor of the poet was finally taken by deputies of Kirovohrad Regional Council on 14 July 2015 after several failed attempts.

It was back on 30 September last year that the saga of renaming the library started. At that time, on All-Ukrainian Day of Libraries the director of the institution Taisa S.Manzhulafiled a petition on behalf of the staff of the library and its active users to the Regional Council to rename the institution and to assign it Taras Shevchenko’s name.

The letter of appeal from the team of the Library was promulgate to the public during the all-Ukrainian action of Shevchenko’s poetry readings near the monument to the poet. "The team believes that the change of name from Regional Children's Library named Arkadii Petrovych Haidar to Kirovohrad Regional Children's Library named after Taras Shevchenko in 2014, which was the year of Taras Shevchenko in Ukraine on the occasion of the famous Ukrainian poet’s 200th anniversary, will help to consolidate the efforts of library specialists, teachers, parents, young readers and the public in terms of patriotic education of future generations, in terms of solidarity and uniting progressively minded youth oriented towards European values around the library in this difficult for the country time. The expedience of renaming is also caused by the location of the institution. The library is located on Shevchenko street in the city park near the monument to the Great Kobzar. There are no other libraries in the city and the region bearing the name of Taras Shevchenko“ - was in the letter.

Regional Council Standing Committee of Education, Science, Culture, Tourism, Sports, Family and Youth Policy approved the corresponding draft decision on 28 November 2014. The first vote on the renaming held on 27 March 2015 was not in favor of the staff and the public. After that, the media waged a powerful information campaign involving deputies, soldiers, doctors, representatives of the library, readers and public figures who were asked to pay attention to staff and to rename the library. At the request of the public the media published the names of deputies who opposed the renaming.

Poetry readings “Shevchenko’s word lives” taking place on 16 July were organized to celebrate a great victory of the team of Regional Children's Library named after Taras Shevchenko. There came little members of the library and their parents.

For reference: Kirovohrad Regional Library for Children is one of the most famous institutions for children of the region and a methodological center of all children's libraries in the region. Exact archival data on the year of foundation of the library are not preserved. We know that in the early 20s Children's City Library was opened in Yelysavethrad, and in 1939 after the formation of Kirovohrad region, the library became regional. During the Second World War the library was closed and resumed its work only in 1946. At that time the library was situated in the former Palace of Pioneers. In 1958, the library received new premises. Since that the library is named after children's writer A. Haidar. On 14 July 2015 Kirovohrad Regional Council renamed Regional Children's Library named after Arkadii Petrovych Haidar to Kirovohrad Regional Children's Library named after Taras Shevchenko (www.memory.gov.ua).

The exhibition presents artworks from the museum’s collection which show by the means of paints how modern artists see and feel Shevchenko, how they remember his words... The works presented are "Portrait of Taras Shevchenko” (oil on canvas) by V. Shevtsov  "Ballad of Ukraine” (oil on canvas) by I. Marchenko and “In the Park named after Shevchenko” (oil on canvas) by people's artist of the USSR, the winner of Shevchenko National Prize, Honored artist of Ukraine S. Shyshko.   There are also portraits reflecting the complex intellectual and emotional life of the poet at the exhibition. Among them: "Portrait of Shevchenko" by V. Kasiian, a graphic artist, art critic, member of USSR Academy of Arts, professor, and People's Artist of the USSR;  portrait “T. Shevchenko” by member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine I. Smychek, linocut "Taras’ science" by member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine S. Pysmennyi.

The most unique exhibit of the exhibition is an etching, a lifetime portrait engraving of Shevchenko by Leipzig master Friedrich Brockhaus created in 1860. At the portrait we can see half-length full face picture of the poet sitting on a chair in a sheepskin coat and a sheepskin hat. The inscription under the print reported: «Печ. со стали Ф.А.Брокгауза в Лейпциге» (print from steel by F. Brockhaus in Leipzig) and below it there is a facsimile Shevchenko’s autograph. This means that the print was made of steel board of Friedrich Brockhaus in Leipzig, and that Taras Shevchenko saw the print and even attested it with the handwritten signature! It is possible that this autograph of the poet was the last...

The staff of Kirovohrad Regional Art Museum joins the numerous congratulations and wishes on the occasion of the renaming of the library and wishes new achievements, success in work, sunny days, long life and inspiration for fruitful work for the benefit of Ukraine!
