On January 18, 2021, the Museum of Arts presented an exhibition of graphic works from the fund collection of the Museum of Arts with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation (our museum won a grant under the program "Culture in times of crisis: institutional support"). (Ukrainian Cultural Foundation - a state institution established in 2017 as a new model of providing  state support and promotion of initiatives on a competitive basis culture and creative industries on a competitive basis. The activity of the Foundation, in accordance with the current legislation, is an integral part of the policy and certain priorities of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine).                                             The graphic works from the stock collection of the Museum of Arts, figuratively speaking, "got a second wind", being dressed in a new frame with a multi-layered passe-partout and anti-reflective glass! Now we can finally admire the unique works of both foreign artists (some of whom, unfortunately, are unknown), and famous Ukrainian artists and our famous fellow artists. Most of the presented works were restored in Odessa and Kharkiv branches of the National Research and Restoration Center of Ukraine. So, let us remind that the term "graphics" comes from the German "Graphik" and the Greek ???????? - "written") and means a kind of fine art, which is characterized by the predominance of lines and strokes, the use of contrasts of white and black and less than in painting, the use of color. The general mean of creating an artistic image in graphics is the simplest way for a person to reproduce what is seen - a line, a stroke, which create the contour of an object or figure.

Drawing is the oldest species graphics, from him begins the emergence of fine arts. Gradually, the graphics became more complicated, which was associated with the invention of new paints - watercolors, gouaches, pastels, tempera, mascara, sanguine. Although the use of these paints plays a role. The world around is very graphic expressive, but somewhat conditional, figurative. Many types of graphic techniques are currently known - etching, lithography, linocut, woodcut, monotype, etc.

The exhibition presents 70 works that strikes with a variety of techniques, themes and plots. Graphic works can not be quickly inspected and passed on, they must be carefully studied, observe the state of nature, delve into the nature of the characters, admire the perfection of lines, the strength of the picture, the psychology of images, complex and true shades human feelings and experiences…

In the technique of watercolor created works by unknown artists of the XIX century, and those whose authorship was established by experts: "Landscape with a house", "Before the picture", R. Coleman's "Military and boy", "Italian Village" (1861), K.M. Chichagov's "Country Cottage", P.Y. Pyasetsky's "House in the Garden" and others. Many are already familiar with the works of graphic artist, art critic A.M. Nuremberg (1887-1979) - "Uzbek musicians" (1913), portraits of relatives of fellow artist V.O. Fedorov (1920-1986) - "Portrait of his wife" (1957), "Portrait of a Grandmother" (1948), "Self-Portrait" (2000) by the master of Ukrainian neo-baroque Y.P. Lutskevich (1934-2001), tender watercolors "Fate" (2006), "Flood on the Gum" (2009) filled with light. ), "On the last ice" (2008), "Morning. Okolytsia ”(2010) by Sumy artist V.K. Mykhailychenko (b. 1949).

Clarity and ease of execution of graphic linesworks is seen on S. Vorobyov`s "Italian landscape" (1859), R.A. Potapov "Landscape" (1863), A.P. Petzolt's "Portrait of Karl Roth" (1846), N. Tsvetkov "Girl under a tree" (1881) , L. Bilousov "Mower on the road" (1843) and others. The chronicler of the time, Honored Artist of Moldova O.F. Foinitsky (1886-1973) is represented by the works "At the Pier" (1946), "On the Dniester" (1948), "Barges" (1951), graphic artist AE Razumny - "Self-portrait" (1932), ”Portrait of the People's Artist of the USSR Baksheev", Honored Artist of Ukraine GS Melikhov (1908-1985) - "Waiting" (1941).

Real jewels of the exhibition are masterfully executed pastel works of painters. Pastel (French pastel from Latin pasta - "dough") - is an artistic material that is compressed, ground into powder and have the appearance of soft colored pencils. At the exhibition you can see lyrical and mysterious portraits of V.A. Bobrov "Portrait of a girl in a blue jacket" (1874), Alieri "Portrait of a girl with a black ribbon around her neck" (1867), D.M. Bolotov "Portrait of a woman in a light pink dress" (1868), G. Gervex's "Portrait of a Gray-haired Man", P. Sokolov's "Male Portrait".

Such a kind of engraving on metal as etching (Italian aqua-forte - "strong water", nitric acid) is represented by prints from printing forms of famous artists-engravers V.V. Mate (1856-1917) "Portrait of Tsvetkov" (1892), Serov (1865-1911) Illustration to I. Krylov's fable "Pike", M.H. Deregus (1904-1958) “Landscape. Autumn "(1958), V.I. Kasiyan (1896-1976)" Portrait of Taras Shevchenko "(1963), I.D. Princevsky" Yet young kobzar sang "(1963).

Woodcut - is an engraving on wood represented by the print "Portrait of Ivan Franko" (1946) by Ukrainian artist V.I. Kasiyan (1896-1976). Gouache on cardboard created his drawings "On the shores of the Gulf of Riga" (1935), "Still Life with Tomatoes" (1967) graphic artist A.M. Nuremberg (1887-1979).

We must also pay tribute to the masters of lithography (from the Greek - "stone" and "write"), which is used to print texts or images on paper. We offer to review the works of M. Mikeshin (1835-1896) "Halt of the Cossacks", "Garrison Soldier", W. Steinbach "Greetings of  Young", M.O. Bogdanov's "Breakfast", "At the Door" (1897), a series of lithographs by unknown artists who dedicated their works to the Decembrists Odoevsky, M. Lunin, M. Muravyov, A. Borisov, Panov, the author of many paintings about the life of Kobzar G.B. Berkovich (1905-1976) "Shevchenko among the Kazakhs", A.Y. Tkachova "Thought about the past" (1964), autolithographs "Taras", "Meeting in the campaign. At the banks of the Dnypro » (illustrations to the novel by M. Gogol "Taras Bulba", 1944-1945) artist-illustrator E.A. Kibrik (1906-1978).

We hope and believe, dear friends, that the lockdown will end soon and you will visit our Museum of Art to enjoy beautiful works of graphic art and see how completely different they "have shone" in a new framing!
