Today we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of our famous countryman, outstanding teacher Vasyl Sukhomlynsky. Vasyl Oleksandrovych was born on September 28, 1918 in the village of Vasylivtsi, Olexandria district of the Kherson province (now Onufriyivsky district of the Kirovograd region) in a poor peasant family. There he spent his childhood and youth. He studied in his native village in a seven-year school, which he graduated in 1933, and then went to study at the Kremenchug Medical College, but soon left there and entered the working faculty, which he graduated early and was admitted to the Pedagogical Institute. Then he was transferred to the Poltava Pedagogical Institute as extra-mural student and graduated in 1938. He returned to his home to work as a teacher of Ukrainian language and literature at Onufriyivka secondary school.

So began a life devoted to children. After in 1948 he became Director of the Pavlysh secondary school he worked there until the end of his life.

As part of the regional program of celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of V. A. Sukhomlynsky, a number of different events are planned.

The Kirovograd Regional Art Museum uses and puts into practice the pedagogical heritage of an outstanding countryman in collaboration with a children's audience. A variety of cultural and artistic activities take into account the individual abilities and skills of each child, develop a sense of beauty and artistic tastes. Vasyl Oleksandrovych considered art as a powerful stimulus for creativity. He associated it with the development of the will, emotions, feelings of the child. He combined children's opinion, imagination and activity.

The museum’s fund collection contains exhibits devoted to the figure of the great teacher. A special place is occupied by his work, "I Give My Heart to Children" (1971), because it outlines the main secrets of the art of an extraordinary teacher. It was here that he stressed that it is very important to create multi-faceted emotional relationships with children in a friendly team, where the teacher is not only a mentor, but first of all a friend, an expert on children's souls.

The exposition “The Art of Being a Friend and a Mentor” successfully combined painting, graphics, commemorative medals and books. Interesting is the presented work of the artist M. G. Bondarenko (1914-1999) “Sukhomlynsky with children”, which depicts the figure of our countryman surrounded by pupils while contemplating the incredible beauty of the bright Ukrainian landscape. The work successfully emphasizes the principles that V. Sukhomlynsky was guided by. He wrote: "Beauty itself affects the soul and does not require an explanation. To educate with beauty is to lead children from subtle observations of the surrounding nature to a deep and emotional penetration into the masterpieces of literature, music, painting, understanding and awareness of human actions, actions, attitudes and the desire to create beauty with their hands.” Thus, he tried to educate children's creative attitude to any kind of activity.

The work of A. V. Navrotsky (1934-2002) "Portrait of V. Sukhomlynsky" gives an idea of the appearance of the outstanding teacher, the features of his face, striking the insight of his thoughtful gaze into the distance.

The exposition is supplemented with several memorable medals of V. A. Sukhomlynsky given to the museum’s fund collection in 2011 by Peter Poberezhny.                       And also there is presented the illustrated historical-lore edition of Volodymyr Bosko “Outstanding figures of the Steppe Hellas” (2004), where on the 287th page the biographical information of Vasyl Sukhomlynsky is presented.

Pedagogical heritage of Vasyl Oleksandrovych does not lose relevance over time. Through the "lessons for thinking", "creativity lessons", he led educating of children to awareness the necessity of self-improvement. Fairy tale, game, fiction, the beauty of nature, art he considered a powerful incentive for the formation of a genuine human personality. He was a master of his craft. He believed that every child is a whole world, the world that is not open and not explored. Therefore, the expanded exposition within the walls of the regional art museum is an incredible desire to honor the memory of a great countryman who, although he did not create on canvas, was an extraordinary artist of children's souls.

The heart devoted to children stopped beating on September 2, 1970 in the village of Pavlish, Onufriyivsky district.
