On June 21, 2018, the exhibition of art works Spiritual Mentor. Student was opened in Kirovohrad Oblast Art Museum. The art works were created by the brush masters, members of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine Matvii Illich Huliaiev (1918-2003) and Viktor Oleksandrovych Kaverin.
In autumn 2017, the museum's scientists by the invitation of Viktor Kaverin visited the artist in his workshop on the Andriivskii Descent. This was not the first meeting with the artist. In 2015, by the initiation of Viktor Oleksandrovych and support of the National Arts Museum of Ukraine, the stock collection of our Museum was extended with 18 art works of his friend, spiritual mentor, famous artist Matvii Illich Huliaiev. This time Viktor Oleksandrovych made another valuable gift - transferred to the museum 14 of his paintings, including portraits and landscapes.
Moreover, today, with the hope for further creative cooperation, we will present a wonderful exhibition of two friends, two artists - Spiritual mentor. Student, which is a vivid confirmation of the different generation’s talents.
According to Viktor Kaverin's memories:
Matvii Illich Huliaiev was born in August 1918 in the Kurgan oblast (Siberia) in the family of the Old Believers. He graduated from Kyiv State Art Institute (professor K.D.Tokhymenko's workshop). Since 1960s, he taught drawing and painting at the studio of working youth in the Kyiv October Palace of Culture.
It is known that he painted pictures on religious topics, so his art works were hardly exhibited. In those years of "military" atheism it was, of course, "nonformat". Lacuna of Matvii Illich's biography was the fact that he was captured during the Battle of Stalingrad. At that time, such a "record" was misunderstood and many human destinies were broken. However, the artist perceived this attitude rather calmly, with understanding, and did not particularly care about, continuing to create and engage gifted youth to his studio. The artists met in 1996 at Andriivskii Descent (there was a workshop of the artist, where he lived). Matvii Illich seared into memories as a modest, decent person who brought up a whole galaxy of famous masters of painting. In 1998, he became a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine (owing to the projection of Viktor Oleksandrovych ).
Viktor Oleksandrovych Kaverin was born on March 11, 1950 in Uzhhorod. In 1962-69, he studied at Kiev Art Secondary School. In 1978, he graduated from Kyiv State Art Institute (lecturers - S.P. Podervianskyi, D.D. Lider). After graduationg, he actively began to participate in many international, all-union, republican exhibitions. Since 1986 - member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. For some time, he combined creative life with the teaching of artistic disciplines at the Department of Arts of the Kiev Academy of Hairdressing. Viktor Oleksandrovych’s paintings are exhibited not only in Ukraine but also abroad.
He creates images of landscapes, portraits, also paintings with plots close to symbolism with religious, socio-psychological topics. Kaverin's art features sharp color and tonal contrasts, open rhythms, dynamic smear, psychologism of images.
Artist's solo exhibitions:
1983 - Kyiv T.H. Shevchenko State University
1992 - Kyiv, gallery Artist (together with artist L. A. Levada);

The exhibition presents 32 picturesque art works of two talented Kiev artists who reveal their soul to the audience and suggest to plunge into the world of lyrical landscapes of Matvii Huliaiev – Summer Evening (1980), The Last of the Storks (1984), Autumn Landscape with Lavra (mid. 1970's) and feel the deep psychology of portraits by Viktor Kaverin - Artist Vasyl Krasiokha (2015), Contemplation (2009), Portrait of the Artist Lesia Levada (2002), etc.
We are sincerely grateful to those people, philanthropists, who with their contributions help the museum community to expand the palette of artistic works stock collection in different genres and types of art. God bless you for further good deeds!
