On March 27, 2018, the display "Theater Mecca in Steppe" was opened in the Section of the Oblast Art Museum – Petro Ossovkyi World and Homeland Art Gallery to the International Day of Theatre.

The International Theater Day was set up in 1961 by the 9th Congress of the International Institute of Theater and is celebrated annually on March 27.

Our native land is rightly considered the "Cradle" of Ukrainian professional theatre, since the premiere of "Natalka Poltavka" in 1882 is considered the official beginning of the functioning of Ukrainian professional theatre. Thus, it is not surprising that the theater has always been both the pride of the city inhabitants and   the artistic symbol of our region. That is why various artists, including the masters of brush, often dedicated many art works.

The exhibition presents works from the stock collection of the Oblast Art Museum; the works are devoted to and depict Ivan Karpenko-Karyi (Tobilevych) State Museum-Reserve "Khutir Nadiia", which was created on the territory of the estate, that belonged to the outstanding playwright, the theatrical figure of the late 19th - early 20th century - Ivan Karpenko-Karyi (Tobilevych).

The estate was built in 1871 by the playwright's father - Karpo Tobilevych and named after his wife Nadiia Tarkovska. Subsequently, Ivan Karpenko-Karyi decides to reside at the estate permanently. At first, the Tobilevych family ran modest private household here. Since that time, there is the preserved "Father's House" and the old chumak well. After returning from a three-year political exile in spring of 1887, Ivan Karpovych settled at the Khutir and decided to turn it into a picturesque motherland nature area, by his own words-"oasis in the steppe".

At "Khutir Nadia”, they wrote 11 plays out of 18, which became the golden stock of national classical drama. These are "One Hundred Thousand", "Holder", as well as historical dramas: "Sava Chalyi", "Handzia" and others.

The founders of the Ukrainian professional theater, famous actors lived at the estate at different times: Mykola Sadovskyi, Panas Saksahanskyi, and Mariia Sadovska-Barilotti. This estate was the meeting place for talented artists: Mariia Zankovetska, Marko Kropyvnytskyi, Mykhailo Starytskyi and many other famous theatrical figures, authors, artists.

The work of Matvii Kohan-Shats (1911-1989), the member of the Union of Artists of the USSR, can be considered as a unique feature of the exhibition:  Willows Rustle. Khutir Nadia (1982) and Karpenko-Karyi's Estate at Khutir Nadia (1982), which are the oldest of the presented paintings.

The exhibition also presents works by members of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. These are the art works of Andrii Khvorost (born 1968), the Chairman of the Kirovohrad Oblast Organization of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine:     Khutir Nadiia (2006); Mykhailo Nadiezhdin, People's Artist of Ukraine  (born 1935) Sunlight (2007) and Andrii Nadiezhdin, Honored Artist of Ukraine  (born 1963) Holly Protection Cover over Khutir Nadiia (2007) and Dawns over Khutir Nadiya (2007); Serhii Shapovalov, Honored Artist of Ukraine  (born 1943) Khutir Nadiia. Autumn (2008); Yurii Vitrenko (born 1955) Khutir Nadiia. Oaks (2005).

The creativity of the younger generation of artists is represented with the artwork by Nataliia Soloviova (born 1987) At Khutir (2017), painted at en plein air last year and donated to the museum stock.

It is no accident that the exposition is opened in Petro Ossovkyi World and Homeland Art Gallery, as Petro Ossovkyi is our outstanding fellow citizen painter, the founder of the "strict style" in art.  Petro Pavlovych is the grandson of one of the students and colleagues of M. Kropyvnytskyi - Dmytro Haidamaka-Vertepov (1867-1936); his grandmother Yuliia Shostakivska and his mother were actors.

In 2008, Petro Ossovkyi published the book by his grandfather "Diary of Tersk Cossack", which is presented in the exposition. Dmytro Vertepov was filling in his own diary in 1889-1891, when he served as a leader of the 1st Gorsko-Mozdok Cossack Regiment. The original diary is stored in the Museum of Theatrical, Musical and Cinema Art of Ukraine in Kyiv.

In his diary, a prominent figure in the Ukrainian theater, a talented actor and great director Dmytro Haidamaka reveales his features of word master. His grandson, Petro Ossovkyi inherited this talent, being an outstanding painter; he created penetrating texts for his albums, interesting prose poems from the life of the artist - Artist's Notes.

The publication of Dmytro Haydamaka's diary is not the single contribution of Petro Ossovkyi to popularize Ukrainian theater. He painted the portrait of Mariia Zankovetska (requested by the employees of the Museum), which currently is stocked in the Museum of Theatrical, Musical and Cinema Art of Ukraine – in the Memorial House-Museum of M. Zankovetska in Kyiv. In addition, P. Ossovskyi presented photos of his grandfather and grandfather - prominent figures of the Ukrainian scene to the department of the Kirovohrad Oblast Local History Museum - the Memorial Museum of M.L. Kropyvnytskyi.  In this museum, there are portraits of M. Kropyvnytskyi, D. Haidamaka, Yu. Shostakivska, painted by Petro Ossovkyi.

We invite visitors to the museum to see the exposition, to feel aesthetic pleasure and enjoy beauty, contemplating artists' paintings of this bright corner of the Ukrainian land.
