On October 13, 2016 Kirovohrad Regional Art Museum opened an exhibition of military and historical miniatures by Volodymyr Krutous "Cossack Protextion" to the Protection of Holy Virgin Mary.
The cossacks theme has always had one of leading positions in artworks. The particular importance of this issue has gained in the years of independence. It is believed that the Cossacks were first to raise the shield on the idea of an independent Ukrainian state, the Cossacks were the first defenders of Ukrainian lands, the descendants of the Cossacks are defending our land in eastern Ukraine, and the Cossacks were those who sincerely celebrated the feast of the Protection. They believed in the power of the Holy Virgin Protection so much that for centuries in Ukraine it has developed Cossacks content and received a second name - Cossacks Protection. At Sich it was a church holiday. Virgin Mary was the patron and defender of the Orthodox army in distant campaigns. The Church of the Intercession was sacred to everybody at Cossack Sich, from its threshold Cossacks went to defend the homeland and thanked for life coming back to it after campaigns.
In autumn on the Protection Cossacks often spent joint council where reelected koshovyi chieftain and foreman. The first church in honor of the Protection Cossacks built in 1659 on Chortomlytska Sich. According to D.I. Yavornytskyi, during the existence of Sich there were 13 churches of the Virgin Intercession built. In addition, the Protection also represented motherhood - holy concept for Cossacks.
The famous explorer of Ukrainian folk customs Oleksa Voropai wrote that after the destruction of Zaporizhzhia Sich in 1775, Cossacks who went over the Danube to emigrate, took the image of the Holy Virgin with them.
